Ups and downs

Well, another deadline has come and gone. It’s amazing how fast they come around – just when you think you can relax and catch your breath, the next deadline is looming before you know it. Working on a magazine means we work three months in advance, so we’ve just completed our July copy and are beginning work on our August features. The downside to that, of course, is that I’m always thinking three months in advance. For example, I’ll panic, thinking I’ve forgotten a friend’s birthday in April because I’m working on copy for June, meanwhile it’s only March and still weeks away from my friend’s birthday. Confusing? You bet!

The one time I do wish I could skip forward three months is now. The weather’s getting chillier and I can feel winter’s on the way. I absolutely hate the cold, so I wish I could fast-forward to September. I try to remind myself about the pros of winter – soup, hot chocolate, sherry, stews (why does it always involve food?!), electric blankets and sexy boots.

I’ve said this before, I know, but one of my favourite parts of my job is the interesting people I get to meet. Today it was Jenny Crwys-Williams, whom I’ve long wanted to meet. Today she came to Caxton to talk to a group of journalists about her fascinating career and offer us some advice. What a wonderful woman! She’s very amusing and had us laughing at her stories of people she’s interviewed, and in some cases, green with envy when we heard of her interviews with Oprah Winfrey, Michael Parkinson, Prince Charles and Martha Beck. She’s an inspiration…

I’m going to end by saying how disappointed I was that Ashley Hayden didn’t win Survivor because if anyone really deserved it, she did. I was rooting for all the way! She played the game the way it should have been played, and she outwitted, outlasted and outplayed everyone. It’s just a pity the other contestants couldn’t see it and took everything so personally. Not voting for her was just petty, in my opinion, and if the shoe had been on the other foot…

Have a great week!
Cheers
